  • Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation Named by WIT

    — Redefining the Road magazine, the official magazine of the Women In Trucking Association (WIT), announces the recipients of the 2019 “Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation.” According to Ellen Voie, president and CEO of WIT, the magazine created the award in 2018 to support part of WIT’s mission to promote the accomplishments of companies that are focused on the employment of women in the trucking industry.

According to Brian Everett, publisher of Redefining the Road, there are several key features that distinguish companies recognized on this list, including: corporate cultures that foster gender diversity; competitive compensation and benefits; flexible hours and work requirements; professional development opportunities; and career advancement opportunities.

“The second year in existence, this award is driven by the marketplace, and the sheer number of individuals in the industry who participated in the process is incredible,” said Everett. More than 150 nominations were received, and nearly 11,000 votes were cast to identify the companies named to the list, according to Everett.

  • First Poppy Presented To Canada’s Governor-General

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, received the symbolic First Poppy from The Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion President, Thomas D. Irvine, CD, in Ottawa on Oct 15th. As Viceregal Patron of The Royal Canadian Legion, Ms. Payette accepted the red poppy and pinned additional poppies to the lapels of Veterans in attendance. The Legion’s 2019 National Poppy Campaign begins each year on the last Friday in October.

“We salute our nation’s Governor General who leads the way each year by accepting the First Poppy so that millions may follow her example,” says Irvine. “With the red poppy this year, we also mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day which eventually led to the end of the war in Europe.”

During the presentation at Rideau Hall, the 2019 digital poppy was unveiled, the second year for this virtual option. People who donate online will receive a digital poppy that can include the name of a Veteran being honoured, and can be shared on social media. People are invited to visit mypoppy.ca starting on October 25. This year, the online initiative is supported by HomeEquity Bank. Canadians living abroad and donors around the world can also take part in the 2019 campaign.
