Alberta drivers may experience delays as a large, slow-moving load will move north from Edmonton to Fort McMurray starting Nov. 2.

Super-Heavy Load Impacts Travel In Northeast Alberta


Due to its large size and weight, the load will travel at a maximum speed of 50 km/h. The load will be escorted with guide vehicles, below posted speed limits using the entire width of the highway including the shoulder. The load will also occasionally travel against the flow of traffic with lanes blocked accordingly.

Route

The load will leave Thermo Design Engineering in south Edmonton using the following route:

Day 1 Nov. 2, 2025 (depart at 11 p.m. night move)

  • Exit from 1424 70 Avenue NW Edmonton
  • 70 Avenue westbound
  • 17 Street southbound
  • Whitemud eastbound counterflow
  • Highway 216 southbound counterflow
  • Highway 14 eastbound to Vegreville

Day 2 Nov. 3, 2025 (daylight move)

  • Highway 36 northbound
  • Highway 45 eastbound (park at Two Hills Scale)

Day 3 Nov. 4, 2025 (daylight move)

  • Highway 45 eastbound
  • Highway 36 northbound
  • Highway 29 eastbound
  • Highway 36 northbound
  • Highway 28 westbound (park at Radway Scale)

Day 4 Nov. 5, 2025 (daylight move)

  • Highway 28 westbound
  • Highway 63 northbound (park at May Tower South Rest Area)

Day 5 Nov. 6, 2025 (daylight move)

  • Highway 63 northbound (park at POE 35 km south of Fort McMurray)

Day 6 Nov. 7, 2025 (early morning move, 12:15 a.m.)

  • Highway 63 northbound
  • Use ramps in Fort McMurray to avoid overpasses
  • Highway 63 northbound (park at north POE 12 km north of Fort McMurray)

Day 7 Nov. 8, 2025 (early morning move, midnight)

  • Highway 63 northbound
  • Highway 63 Counterflow northbound
  • Voyageur Road westbound
  • Aostra Road southbound
  • West and south to site

  • The load being transported is a de-methanizer pressure vessel used in natural gas processing.
  • The tower is 6.5 metres wide, 7.92 metres high, and 104 metres long.
  • The weight of the unit is 529,600 kilograms, including support equipment.
  • The trailers carrying the unit contain 352 wheels.
