BCCSA Opens Applications for Second Year of Bursary Program to Support Careers in Construction Safety

Today, the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) opened applications for the second year of its Bursary Program, offering up to a total of $60,000 to BC workers and students pursuing post-secondary education in construction safety, occupational health and safety, or related fields. Individual bursaries range from $1,000 to $2,500 and are intended to reduce financial barriers for those who want to build a career in BC’s construction industry.

The bursary reflects a growing demand for safety professionals across the province. BC’s construction industry now employs more than 264,000 people and accounts for 9.2 per cent of the province’s GDP. With more than 57,000 construction companies operating across BC and the workforce growing five per cent year-over-year, the need for qualified safety professionals has never been more pressing.

“Construction is the backbone of BC’s economy, and safety professionals keep that backbone strong," stated Mike McKenna, Executive Director, BCCSA. "This bursary is our investment in the next generation of people who will protect workers and build a safer industry.”

In its first year, the program awarded $21,500 to 16 students from across British Columbia. The program welcomes a wide range of candidates, including current construction workers looking to transition into safety roles, new and returning students entering safety programs, and existing safety professionals seeking to advance their credentials.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled in or accepted by a recognized post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree program in occupational health and safety or a related field, and must reside in British Columbia during their studies. Programs that meet the educational requirements for the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST®) or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP®) designation are preferred. Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need, prior construction industry experience, and a clear commitment to a safety career in BC.

As part of the application, candidates must submit a written response or video describing their interest in construction safety and their career goals, along with a transcript or letter of reference. Successful recipients receive funding to put toward tuition, course materials, safety equipment, or required tools.

Applications are open from May 1 to July 31, 2026. The BCCSA will notify successful applicants by September 15, 2026. To apply or learn more, visit: www.bccsa.ca/bursary.php.
