Container Trucking Commissioner To Begin Next Phase Of Consultations

Consultations on the B.C. Off-Dock Drayage Recommendation Report are soon moving to the next phase, with face-to-face meetings between the B.C. container trucking commissioner and key stakeholders having taken place in October.

“These consultations are essential to ensuring that our regulatory framework supports and accelerates sustainable growth for B.C.’s thriving drayage industry, in a way that is fair for everyone in the sector,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “I look forward to further input from all the stakeholders who will be taking part in these sessions.”

The Off-Dock Drayage Recommendation Report was published on May 12, 2021, in response to a request from Fleming to examine opportunities to make targeted adjustments to the rates and policies for off-dock drayage activity in the Lower Mainland.

On June 6, the Office of the British Columbia Container Trucking Commissioner invited industry stakeholders to provide written feedback about the implementation of the off-dock drayage recommendations. Seven written submissions were received and have been posted online.

The consultations being undertaken by the commissioner will inform the next round of improvements for those working in the container trucking sector. Six stakeholder groups and 15 individual drivers so far have registered to participate in next week’s sessions.

Since 2017, the Province has made several improvements to wages and working conditions for drivers, including increasing hourly wages, increasing wages for independent operators and increasing the minimum daily call-out rate.
