CPKC Receives 170th Tier 4 Locomotive

In late June, the 170th and final Wabtec Evolution Series ET44AC Tier 4 locomotive was delivered to CPKC, completing a multi-year order with Wabtec and marking another milestone in the renewal of the road locomotive fleet.

“These locomotives are a smart investment in the strength and reliability of our fleet,” said Baden Tidd, Vice-President Mechanical-Locomotive. “They give our crews modern, fuel-efficient power to move our customers’ freight safely and efficiently.”

Each of these new locomotives features advanced traction control, efficient cooling systems and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certified Tier 4 diesel engines. These locomotives are expected to significantly reduce air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and particulate matter compared to Tier 3 diesel locomotives. They are also expected to enhance fuel economy and reliability while further reducing the emissions impact of CPKC’s operations.

As part of this multi-year capital program, CPKC has invested in locomotives from the world’s two leading manufacturers. With delivery now complete with Wabtec, CPKC is continuing its fleet renewal with Progress Rail, including 30 new EMD SD70ACe-T4 Tier 4 freight locomotives expected to be delivered in the second half of 2026 from Progress Rail’s facility in Muncie, Indiana. These units are part of a broader order of 65 new Tier 4 locomotives from Progress Rail.

Through an ongoing investment of more than US$800 million in new, American-built locomotive power, CPKC is strengthening service reliability, supporting growth and maintaining industry-leading service for customers and the North American economy.
