From The Archives: A Fishy Mystery, Solved At Last!

A reprint of a photo from our archives stirred up some fishy memories for a local man.

On page 20 of our August 2026 issue, we shared a funny fish photo from our archives. Originally published forty years ago on the cover of our July/August 1986 issue, this image shows a photo of Supply Post owner Ken Kenward’s head, pasted onto a black & white photo of an unknown gentleman wielding his impressive catch of the day.

Plot twist: the original fisherman contacted us, and now we know more of the story behind this amazing photo!

Meet Tex Bussey, our mystery fisherman.

Tex was a salesman for Zephyr Trucks and then later Dams Truck Sales until his retirement. Both Zephyr and Dams were regular advertisers with Supply Post, and this is likely how we came across the original for the joke post.

From the Archives: A Fishy Mystery, Solved at Last! Which fisherman is the original?? — *Wait – which one is the original?*

This impressive salmon was only the second fish ever caught by Tex. Weighing-in at a whopping 47 lbs, Tex and his catch caught the eye of a photographer in downtown Victoria, BC, eventually ending up in the local newspaper.

Tex thinks he caught this beast in Becher Bay, in 1962 or ’63.

In reference to the original caption from our archive, Tex thinks that “Jim” and “Sam” were likely Jim Chase and Sam Gerwin, both employees of Zephyr Trucks and avid fishermen themselves. You can imagine the friendly rivalry going on between these guys!

Fast forward to today, when Tex found a copy of Supply Post August 2026 left on a lunch table. It had been years since he had seen a copy, so began flipping through it. He could not believe he was looking at a photo of himself — minus his head!
