Alberta Is Reducing Trucking Barriers

The Alberta government is leading the way in breaking down trucking barriers, making it faster and safer for truck drivers to move goods across Canada.

Alberta’s government has launched the Canadian Trucking Regulations Hub, a made-in-Alberta digital tool that helps truck drivers navigate regulatory and operational differences across provinces and territories.

“Alberta is proud to lead the development of this made-in-Alberta solution that supports truckers," stated Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors. "By bringing key information together in one place, we are making it easier to navigate rules across jurisdictions, saving drivers time, and helping industry operate more effectively.”

The Hub helps truck drivers plan their routes accurately so they can avoid low bridges and prevent costly infrastructure damage. It provides clear, accessible information which will help with links to permit information and safety code standards to navigate interprovincial trips. Instead of searching through multiple sources, the Hub brings everything together in one place.

Alberta has worked closely with federal, provincial and territorial partners to develop and refine the tool, with all jurisdictions participating and contributing to data validation. Each province and territory will now be responsible for maintaining and validating its own data, ensuring information remains accurate and up to date. Responsibility for long-term management of the Hub is expected to transition to the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) in fall 2026.

Alberta’s government is continuing to take action to strengthen the trucking industry by engaging with trucking companies and driving schools on issues facing the industry and how to address them. Measures include potential experience-based requirements for commercial drivers coming to Alberta, such as creating a two-year waiting period, as well as stronger penalties for damage to public infrastructure. This ongoing work reflects a continued focus on ensuring drivers are well-prepared, while protecting Alberta’s transportation network and supporting safer roads.
