Doppstadt Shredder Helps Control Scrap Tire Mountain

Oct 8, 2026 - 5 hours ago

Giant scrap tire mountains presented a major logistical challenge for Brownsville, Texas. With the INVENTHOR 9, the city processes large volumes directly on site, reducing the need for external service providers.

In Brownsville, Texas, large quantities of scrap tires had accumulated over many years. These stockpiles took up valuable space, created significant logistical overhead, and brought additional risks: tire fires are extremely difficult to control, while standing water inside stored tires can create ideal conditions for mosquitoes and other disease vectors to breed.

At the same time, maintenance and repair costs were rising for the existing shredding technology, which had been in service for many years. Brownsville needed a solution capable of reliably processing large volumes of tires directly on site. The city was also looking for a slow speed shredder with high torque to minimize heat generation and fire risks in the shredding chamber.

Built for Action

Together with Ecoverse, Doppstadt’s North American distribution partner, the city opted for the INVENTHOR 9.

As the flagship among mobile slow speed shredders, the INVENTHOR 9 delivers precisely the power needed to process the highly resistant composite material of rubber, textile, and steel reinforcement. Even massive piles of complete passenger car and truck tires are reliably gripped and pre-shredded. This is ensured by the powerful VarioDirect Drive concept, which delivers consistently high torque to the drum at all times. Thanks to its robust tracked chassis, the Doppstadt shredder effortlessly maneuvers across the uneven terrain of the recycling yard and operates right where the material is located.

“It is assisting us and helping us stay in compliance and meet the demand. As the city is growing very fast, we saw that trend in the tires. The choice we made worked out not only for our management side, but also for the operator,” says Jose Roberto Maldonado, Environmental Compliance Manager, City of Brownsville.

Lower External Costs. Greater Control.

The INVENTHOR 9 supports Brownsville not only in clearing existing tire stockpiles. Tires from municipal collection and cleanup operations can also be processed directly where they are collected. This simplifies further handling and reduces the effort required for storage and transport, as shredding significantly reduces the volume of the tires.

For the city, this translates into greater flexibility in material logistics – as well as less reliance on external processing and transport services. While outsourcing or the costly removal of scrap tires previously incurred high per-piece costs, in-house processing completely eliminates these expenses.

Brownsville has regained control over its scrap tire problem – turning environmental liabilities into genuine added value.
