Province Awards Over $5.5 Million For Quarry Rehabilitation

Nov 15, 2021 - 3 years ago

The Manitoba government will provide more than $5.5 million for 55 projects as part of the province’s quarry rehabilitation program, Agriculture and Resource Development Minister Ralph Eichler announced earlier this fall.

Province Awards Over $5.5 Million For Quarry Rehabilitation

“The program was created specifically to ensure depleted pits and quarries are rehabilitated to a condition that is safe and environmentally stable,” said Eichler. “Our government is pleased to see so many projects moving forward and are encouraged by the environmental benefits as a result of the program, as well as the added bonus of boosting our economy by supporting this additional work.”

The Manitoba government launched an application intake for the Quarry Rehabilitation Program on Private Land and Municipal Land Program earlier this year.

The program offers support of up to $200,000 for eligible projects such as:
• sloping and grading;
• moving oversize boulders and other materials;
• spreading topsoil; and
• seeding graded areas.

Applications were reviewed to ensure they met the eligibility requirements and the scope of the projects were reasonable. In addition, a risk assessment was conducted by an independent consultant to ensure funding was provided to the highest priority projects. These projects will remediate quarries on private and municipal land.
