Liebherr Report on Crane Salvage Operation - Part I

The first salvage operations of the mobile harbour cranes that fell into the harbour basin have begun. As a result, the two 50-metre long lattice booms, each weighing 35 tonnes, were lifted onto land.

In order to do so, the specialists from BALTIC Taucherei- und Bergungsbetrieb Rostock GmbH detached the lattice booms from the mobile harbour cranes and cut them into smaller pieces. The floating crane “Baltic Lift”, which has a maximum lifting capacity of 200 tonnes, salvaged the parts of the booms. Following the salvage work, the boom parts were cleaned and transported. Initially they will be stored on the site of Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH.

Further salvage work has been assigned to the floating crane “Hebo Lift 9” from Holland, which arrived in the international Port of Rostock on Thursday morning. The arrival of the crane was delayed by a few days due to weather conditions in the North Sea.

During the next few days the salvage company HEBO will start with the salvage work. The mobile harbour cranes will each be lifted onto the quayside in one piece by “Hebo Lift 9”, which has a maximum lifting height of 67 metres and a maximum lifting capacity of 800 tonnes. Including the necessary preparatory work such as the attaching of rigging and lifting gear, the salvaging of the cranes is expected to take several days.

In order not to interfere with the salvage work, a safety area has been defined in agreement with the Port of Rostock GmbH, Rostock Port Authority and the Stralsund Waterways and Shipping Office.
