Manitoba To Require NSC Numbers Starting July 1

Jun 16, 2025 - one year ago

Carriers are reminded that the province of Manitoba is confirming their new requirement for trucks to display their National Safety Code (NSC#) number will apply to out of province trucks that operate into and through Manitoba.

Manitoba To Require NSC Numbers Starting July 1

Out-of-province carriers are not exempt from this requirement when travelling in Manitoba. Out-of-province carriers are required to mark their vehicles with their NSC, or equivalent number issued in their jurisdiction (i.e. CVOR or NIR), when traveling in Manitoba.

This new requirement for regulated vehicles does not come into force until July 1, 2025, to allow motor carriers time to change their vehicle markings. As of June 16, 2025, Amendments not yet in force, and not included: [s. 9(1)(b)] (in force on 1 Aug. 2025). For the most up-to-date language of the code, visit this link.

The requirements for operator identification on regulated vehicles are specified in Part 3 of the Regulated Vehicles (Safety Fitness, Operator Identification and Records and Vehicle Exemptions) Regulation.

Manitoba’s regulated vehicle operator identification requirements are:

  • A distinctive mark or graphic that readily identifies the registered operator placed in a conspicuous place on each lateral side of the vehicle
  • The NSC number of the registered operator placed in a conspicuous place on each lateral side of the vehicle
  • Each letter or figure must be a minimum of 5 cm tall and must contrast with the background it is placed on
  • The regulated vehicle identification requirements apply to power units (i.e. trucks or truck tractors), not to semi-trailers

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure also recommends the following:

  • The registered operator’s identification markings is the most prominent of the regulated vehicle markings when more than one company’s name/logo is on a single vehicle
  • The registered operator’s NSC number is clearly identified as the NSC number.  This can be achieved by preceding the NSC number marking with one of the options noted below:
    • NSC #: XXXXXXXXX
    • NSC: XXXXXXXXX
    • NSC No.: XXXXXXXXX
