Finning Apprentice Dante Bavado Wins Bronze At Skills Alberta

Dante Bavado, a third-year year apprentice at Finning took home a bronze medal from the Skills Alberta competition earlier this season.

Designed to test participants’ trade skills, the event consists of several challenges. Competitors must display their skills, knowledge, and professionalism as they complete tasks.

“It’s the Olympics of trades and technology,” says Patricia Nelson, Finning’s external training manager.
Representing both Finning and Grande Prairie Regional College where he attends school, Dante finished third in the Heavy Vehicle Technology category.

“It was a unique opportunity to show off my abilities and promote the trade at the same time,” Dante said.
“The best part was the hydraulic troubleshooting on the skid steer. And the most difficult was the measuring portion. I hadn't done a lot of measuring of the undercarriage, so it was something that I could use some improvement on.”

Skills Alberta, the provincial chapter of Skills Canada, is a non-profit organization that promotes careers in technology and skilled trades to high school and post-secondary students.

“We are very proud of Dante and his achievement,” says David Primrose, president of Finning Canada.
“He showed exceptional skill and talent while exhibiting his trade and demonstrating career opportunities for the next generation.”

The gold medalist of the Alberta competition will go to the Skills Canada Competition in Vancouver, and then the national gold medal winner will represent Canada at the World Skills Competition this fall in Shanghai, China.
