Hayes: King Of The West Coast

A ghost sign appeared on the side of an old building at 295 West 2nd Avenue in Vancouver when the building beside it was being demolished for urban renewal: Hayes Anderson Motor Trucks – a British Columbia product – Satisfactory service assures lasting satisfaction. The sign had originally been hand painted on the False Creek industrial area building in the 1930’s.

Trans Mountain Re-Starts Construction on Expansion Project

Trans Mountain has issued ‘Notice to Proceed’ directives to some of its prime construction contractors triggering mobilization of the initial workforce necessary to build the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. The directives give the contractors 30 days to mobilize equipment and commence the process of hiring workers, procuring goods and services, and developing detailed construction work plans.

Construction work will soon begin in communities along the route, including along the right-of-way in Alberta between Edmonton and Edson, and in the Greater Edmonton area. This includes an immediate return to work at Burnaby Terminal and on land at Westridge Marine Terminal. Specific start dates in the remaining construction areas are subject to final regulatory approvals and permits.

“I am pleased to announce another significant milestone for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project with the commencement of construction activities and the issuance of the notice to some contractors to begin mobilizing equipment and crews in select areas in August and September 2019. With the first wave of regulatory approvals complete, we are confident that we have a path forward by which the Expansion Project construction can commence,” says Ian Anderson, President and CEO of Trans Mountain Corporation.

BC Ferries Supports Whale Research At Galiano Island

Thermal imaging cameras installed for a one-year pilot project

Scientists are getting a better look at whales as they transit near Galiano Island thanks to thermal imaging cameras installed at BC Ferries’ Sturdies Bay terminal on Galiano Island. The cameras are active around-the-clock for a year-long pilot project that aims to improve the overall detection of whales in the Salish Sea, even at night.

Double The Fun: 100th Birthday Party For 1919 Trucks

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum hosted a 100th Birthday party for two of its 1919 trucks on Friday, July 12th; a 1919 International Model F1 and a 1919 Pierce Arrow The event coincided with this year’s Walcott Truckers Jamboree.

“The 1919 International is the first truck Bill Moon ever purchased”, says Dave Meier, museum curator. “He kept the truck at his house under the car port. His kids played on it and Bill drove it in many parades. It was the truck that started his love of collecting.”

It’s important to note that that same model of truck was the first to climb Pike’s Peak. 1,591 of these trucks were produced. The truck has a top speed of 17 MPH.

CEO Ellen Voie Named Cinderella To CEO Of The Year

Women In Trucking Association (WIT) President and CEO Ellen Voie was named the 2019 Cinderella to CEO of the Year, along with winning her award category, “Climbing the Beanstalk” for cultivating an innovative improvement to the workplace to create inroads for women to achieve career goals and enhanced work-life balance opportunities for all genders.

The Cinderella to CEO Awards recognize women who have overcome obstacles to change businesses, communities and industries for the better. The inaugural awards, inspired by the book From Cinderella to CEO, How to Master the 10 Lessons of Fairy Tales to Transform Your Work Life by Cary Broussard, occurred Thursday, August 8 at the JW Marriott Essex House, honoring 200 women across industries and communities who were nominated for the awards.

"Our goal is to accelerate the successes of women who have worked hard and helped others to also succeed by connecting them to opportunities and each other," said Cary Broussard, CEO of Broussard Global. "In 2030, women in the U.S. are expected to control 75 percent of the wealth in this country.
