  • Pipeline fight is not over, and Canadians everywhere have a stake

By Robert Hackett in Opinion, Energy, Politics

The Trudeau government and the petrobloc (the fossil fuel industries and their political, financial and media allies) would like you to believe that the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline (TMX), intended to triple the flow of diluted bitumen from the Athabasca Sands to the port of Vancouver, is a done deal.

  • CTA Calls Supply Chain To Action On Labour Code Changes

The Canadian Trucking Alliance is calling  on the supply chain to join the trucking industry in pressing for exemptions to three new Labour Code provisions that will take effect September 1, 2019.

The provisions, as they currently stand, would disrupt the entire Canadian goods movement and logistics economy, says CTA.

ESDC initiated scheduled hearings this summer with management and labour stakeholders in various industries to discuss the possibility of exemptions. CTA met with officials on Aug. 1 and requested exemptions to the following new provisions:

  • New Doosan DX170LC-5 Crawler Excavator Meets Weight Limits For Simplified Transportation

Doosan Infracore North America, LLC, is expanding its crawler excavator lineup with the new DX170LC-5 excavator. The 17-metric-ton model falls below the 80,000 gross vehicle weight rating limit for simplified and less expensive transportation.

This new Doosan excavator size allows for easier transportation, especially for small- to mid-size contractors who perform light excavation projects, such as digging residential basements or commercial building footings. This model reduces the need to obtain a special transport permit when moving to and from jobsites. The width and combined weight between the machine, trailer and Class 7 towing vehicle meets current transportation requirements. Owners should still check local requirements when transporting equipment.

  • Women In Trucking Association Earns A 2019 ASAE Power of A Silver Award

Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has earned a 2019 American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Power of A Silver Award for its innovative approach to increase the number of women in the trucking industry.

ASAE honored the program launched by WIT to generate positive awareness of the trucking industry and plant the seed for the next generation of female drivers. The program has three components: the WIT truck driving doll named Clare, the Girl Scout/WIT Transportation Patch program, and the “Scouting for Cookies” activity book, where the reader follows a young girl through the supply chain to understand where Girl Scout cookies come from. This creative approach gives young women positive exposure to the industry before they even enter the workforce.

“We applaud Women In Trucking for creating and implementing such a collaborative initiative that strengthens society,” said Sharon J. Swan, FASAE, CAE, chief executive officer of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and chair of the Power of A Awards Judging Committee. “Their initiative exemplifies how no other sector helps improve lives as comprehensively as the association community.”
