  • At BCIT, Indigenous Youth Are Driving Canada’s Economic Engine

There’s one group in Canada whose growth is quickly outpacing all others: Indigenous youth. Since 2006, the country’s Indigenous population has increased 42.5%—over four times as fast as other demographics—and younger generations, in particular, have seen gains of 39%.

These young people are smart, driven, pragmatic, and motivated to join the workforce. But too often, the best job opportunities are in metropolitan centres, far away from many Indigenous communities. This forces young people to choose between their future careers and their homes, friends, and families.

So the question is: are there stable, in-demand industries that can bring lucrative jobs to the doorsteps of Indigenous youth? And do they allow the freedom to travel, live abroad, and change career tracks if so desired? As Vince Jones knows, job opportunities in the railway industry have been hugely successful in serving this need.

  • New Survey Technologies Help Conquer Challenges Of Difficult Terrain

Fieldwork for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP) is gearing up. Surveying for the Project right-of-way is underway in some areas. One of the remarkable aspects of the Project is the technology available to support construction compared with equipment available to surveyors for the original Trans Mountain Pipeline in the early 1950s. We connected with one of our original surveying contractors, McElhanney, which is now doing survey work on TMEP, to learn more.

McElhanney is the oldest, employee-owned engineering and geomatics firm in Canada. Tell us about your company’s history.

McElhanney was founded in Vancouver in 1910 by William Gordon McElhanney. In the early- to mid-1950s, the firm was busy with booming development in the city of Vancouver, construction of the Kemano Project for the aluminum smelter in Kitimat, a new highway up the west part of BC to the Yukon and supporting crews in the gas fields being discovered in the Fort St. John area. McElhanney company partner Bill Papove, a professional surveyor and professional engineer, led our crews working on the Trans Mountain Pipeline for Canadian Bechtel Ltd.

  • The "Little Iron Horse" Stands Tall in Black and Gold on a New Royal Canadian Mint Coin

Nearly 400 years after the Canadian horse was first brought to Canada by the settlers of New France, the "little iron horse" that helped build a nation is being celebrated on a pure silver Royal Canadian Mint coin that combines gold and black rhodium plating.  Designed by artist Claude Thivierge of Saint-Zotique, Quebec, this eye-catching coin depicts the heads of two horses, positioned in the form of a yin and yang symbol, in celebration of this unique breed's lasting bond with Canadian history. On the obverse, the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II shines in gold against the darkness of a rhodium background.  This exceptional coin, along with many new offerings, is available as of now.
