  • How Can Climate Change Impact Canadian Concrete Infrastructure?

AUGUST 1, 2019 BY AMY CHEN

According to an engineer and researcher at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), global climate change is expected to lead to the increased deterioration of concrete infrastructure in Canada in the future.

Sudip Talukdar, civil engineering program coordinator in BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment, did computer simulations of the effect of climate change on concrete in Vancouver and Toronto.

  • Volvo CE Masters Construction's Toughest Challenge

Over the course of three years and many challenges of nerve and knowledge, more than 3,200 technicians from across the globe are whittled down to a team of just three victors. As a test of grit, stamina and teamwork, there is nothing else that compares to Volvo CE’s Masters Competition.

The competition has grown to more than 3,500 entrants.

The Masters Competition was launched as a novel way to showcase the talents of the many parts and services technicians working across Volvo Construction Equipment’s (Volvo CE) dedicated dealer network. When it began in 1990 individual participants were pitted against each other and tasked with completing a series of machine tests. Fast forward almost 30 years and the contest – now judged in teams – has grown into the industry’s biggest and most challenging technician battleground. A testament to its heritage is that the children of original competitors are now competing themselves, with one former winner’s daughter making it through to this year’s final in March.

Hans-Juergen Salau, Global Manager Technical Training at Volvo CE, who organizes the competition together with Jan Fogelberg, Manager Technical Training, says: “Not only does the contest identify the best of the best, but it also boosts the reputation of hard-working dealers everywhere and shows just how much skill is needed to deliver a world-class service to our customers.”

  • CTA Calls Supply Chain To Action On Labour Code Changes

The Canadian Trucking Alliance is calling  on the supply chain to join the trucking industry in pressing for exemptions to three new Labour Code provisions that will take effect September 1, 2019.

The provisions, as they currently stand, would disrupt the entire Canadian goods movement and logistics economy, says CTA.

ESDC initiated scheduled hearings this summer with management and labour stakeholders in various industries to discuss the possibility of exemptions. CTA met with officials on Aug. 1 and requested exemptions to the following new provisions:

  • New Doosan DX170LC-5 Crawler Excavator Meets Weight Limits For Simplified Transportation

Doosan Infracore North America, LLC, is expanding its crawler excavator lineup with the new DX170LC-5 excavator. The 17-metric-ton model falls below the 80,000 gross vehicle weight rating limit for simplified and less expensive transportation.

This new Doosan excavator size allows for easier transportation, especially for small- to mid-size contractors who perform light excavation projects, such as digging residential basements or commercial building footings. This model reduces the need to obtain a special transport permit when moving to and from jobsites. The width and combined weight between the machine, trailer and Class 7 towing vehicle meets current transportation requirements. Owners should still check local requirements when transporting equipment.
