  • Partnerships BC To Operate As Infrastructure BC With Expanded Mandate

Partnerships BC To Operate As Infrastructure BC With Expanded Mandate

Partnerships BC is announcing today that the organization will now operate as Infrastructure BC, which better reflects the services provided by the Crown Corporation.
“As we build and recover from COVID-19, our government is committed to getting British Columbians back to work with good paying jobs in the construction industry,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Finance. “In Budget 2020, we committed $22.9 billion in infrastructure spending, the highest capital spending in B.C.’s history. Infrastructure is a big part of our plan to keep B.C. moving ahead – building schools, hospitals, roads and more affordable housing that our growing province needs – and into recovery.”
“Infrastructure BC is the provincial centre of expertise supporting the planning, procurement and implementation of public infrastructure projects,” explains Dana Hayden, Infrastructure BC Board Chair.
Operating since 2002, working with owners, the crown agency has led 61 completed project procurements throughout Canada with a value of $21.4 billion.
Through Infrastructure BC, government will begin to provide information about approved projects, as well as those under consideration – including those in early stages of planning that may not receive government approval. This will come in the form of an information brochure updated each year in spring and fall, which will allow private sector firms to better plan and compete on projects.
“The construction environment of today requires a broad spectrum of procurement options. Infrastructure BC will assist government and project owners in selecting the best delivery model to build complex projects such as highways, bridges, schools, and hospitals,” states Mark Liedemann, Infrastructure BC President and CEO.

Fleet operators and owners have an important role to play in keeping their drivers safe in winter conditions.
    By Marnie Douglas, WorkSafe BC

Driving on B.C.’s highways during the winter months can be dangerous, particularly if you drive for work and need to be out on the road, rain or shine.
But staying safe in winter conditions is more than just checking the forecast and driving conditions — fleet operators and owners must ensure their vehicles are winterized and that drivers are prepared and educated in what to do in winter conditions.
“Our message is prepare for winter,” says Mark Ordeman, manager, OHS Consultation and Education Services, WorkSafeBC. “We want employers to be prepared for changing conditions and winter driving starting in October. It’s so important to be having those conversations now with your drivers.”
The number of work-related crashes in B.C. climbs sharply in winter months — from 482 on average in May, to 670 in November. B.C.’s mountain ranges, changing elevations, and unpredictable weather make it one of the most demanding winter driving environments in North America. For more than half the year — from early October to late April — weather
conditions can change from summer-like to winter over the course of several hours, adds Ordeman.

  • Semi-Truck Trailer Orders Surge in Q4

Semi-Truck Trailer Orders Surge in Q4

While many businesses unfortunately continue to struggle amid the COVID-19 pandemic, others — including Stoughton Trailers, LLC — are experiencing tremendous sales growth and boosting their staffing. Sales secured through several new dealers contributed to the fourth quarter’s dramatically increased order volume, as well as new fleet customers and existing customers across all markets. The majority of semi-trailers sold were dry vans, designed to hold palletized, boxed or loose freight.
“Despite the unpredictability we saw in the spring and early summer due to COVID-19, our business and industry have swiftly recovered and even thrived," said Stoughton Trailers Chief Commercial Officer Jeremy Sanders. "The fact that we’re experiencing such a large order volume increase for van trailers reinforces the health and resilience of our company, and the trust customers have in our brand.” Trailer sales declined from April to July as fleet customers became apprehensive about purchasing equipment in the first several months of the pandemic. However, orders began to rebound in August and have steadily grown from there, Sanders said. “Customers have since gained confidence that the freight business will remain strong and are investing in trailers as well as utilizing our Stoughton Lease rental trailer fleet,” he said. A second factor resulting in greater order volume is the shift of more freight toward online order delivery. The industry requires more trailers to manage the logistical challenges of increased parcel shipments.
The sharp order increase will keep trailer builders and other staff steadily busy through 2021, Sanders said. To attract new employees, Stoughton Trailers increased its hourly base pay for several important entry-level and skilled positions: assemblers, $16; machine operators, $17; and welders, $18.25. The company continues its aggressive recruiting effort that began in September, with the hopes of hiring several hundred workers in the coming months. • Concrete – The World’s Most Widely Used Material – Targets Carbon Neutral Future

Concrete - The World's Most Widely Used Material - Targets Carbon Neutral Future

Forty of the world’s leading cement and concrete companies today unveiled a joint industry ‘2050 Climate Ambition’. The ambition statement demonstrates the commitment of the industry across the globe to drive down the CO2 footprint of the world’s most used man-made product, with an aspiration to deliver society with carbon neutral concrete by 2050.
Launched by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) on behalf of its member companies, the ambition statement represents a critical milestone for the industry. It is the first time it has come together globally to state a collective ambition for a carbon neutral future. The statement identifies the essential levers that will be required to achieving carbon neutral concrete, including: reducing and eliminating energy related emissions, reducing process emissions through new technologies and deployment of carbon capture, more efficient use of concrete, reuse and recycling of concrete and buildings, and harnessing concrete’s ability to absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere.
The climate ambition builds on the longstanding climate commitments and sustainability progress of GCCA member companies and affiliate associations across the world, setting out a global vision for the long-term sustainability of concrete, the vital building material that has shaped the modern world.
Dinah McLeod, GCCA Chief Executive said, “As we face the challenges for future generations and begin global economic recovery, concrete will be even more critical to building the sustainable world of tomorrow. That’s why we are making this commitment today, in order that our crucial industry aligns with global targets, including the Paris Agreement.Concrete has a vital role to play in addressing the need for sustainable communities and prosperity. It is a key ingredient of infrastructure, homes, clean water and community resilience as our climate changes. Crucially, it will also help facilitate the transition to clean/green energy. We believe this journey will be challenging but are fully committed to working together with our members, partners and stakeholders across the industry and supply chain to achieve this ambition.”
The concrete and cement industry is a key part of the construction sector – which accounts for 13% of global GDP – with a track record of taking climate action. This has included delivering a 19% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious material along with a ninefold increase in alternative fuel use since 1990.
Albert Manifold, GCCA President and Chief Executive of CRH plc said, “The 2050 Climate Ambition represents our industry’s commitment to further reducing emissions and ensuring that the vital product we provide can be delivered on a carbon neutral basis by 2050. There is a significant challenge involved in doing so and achieving alignment across our industry on a sustainable way forward is an important first step. We cannot however succeed alone and in launching our ambition statement we are also highlighting the need for our industry to work collaboratively with other stakeholders in support of our ambition for a more sustainable future.”
GCCA member companies are currently developing a 2050 concrete roadmap which will set out the detailed actions and milestones that the industry will enact in order to achieve its ambition. This will include working across the built environment value chain to deliver the vision of carbon neutral concrete in a circular economy, whole life context. The 2050 concrete roadmap is due to be published in the second half of 2021.

Anthony Hobley, Executive Director of the World Economic Forum’s Mission Possible Platform which is working across different industries to help achieve a carbon neutral future said, “Ambitious business and industry action led leadership is vital to achieving the climate targets that the world needs to survive and thrive. We know that concrete is so important to many of the challenges humanity faces but we also know it needs to be delivered more sustainably. We are delighted by the important step of articulating the ambition for carbon neutral concrete and look forward to working with this industry collaboration to deliver the detailed pathway and tools necessary towards achieving a net-zero economy.
As the world deals with the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis, the construction sector is playing an important role in economic recovery. The GCCA’s climate ambition statement demonstrates its commitment to helping build a more sustainable and safer future – recognising that the world needs cleaner and greener infrastructure.
