  • Propane users can do their part by being prepared in the event of a flood

Many parts of central and northeast British Columbia are under warnings and advisories due to flooding. The Canadian Propane Association (CPA) and propane retailers encourage residents to do their part to protect themselves and their property in the event of a flood and after a flood occurs.

“We are in uncharted territory in dealing with the COVID-19 virus and many Canadians are already under a great deal of stress,” says Nathalie St-Pierre, CPA President and CEO. “But if propane users are prepared in the event of a flood, they can help to alleviate additional pressure by ensuring they are emergency ready and keep their homes and family safe.”

The CPA’s Flood Safety Tips can help Canadians take concrete actions to be prepared if flooding occurs. Propane is among the safest fuels available – it is non-toxic and dissipates quickly if accidentally released – but it is important to always be cautious when and after a flood occurs. Floods can have serious effects on the structure of a home, so it is important to take precautions and follow the CPA’s simple safety measures.

  • Case Construction Equipment Donates Skid Steer To Habitat For Humanity

CASE Construction Equipment has donated a skid steer to Wichita Habitat for Humanity, expanding the manufacturer’s relationship with the international non-profit organization dedicated to improving lives through affordable home ownership. Globally, Habitat for Humanity has helped build, renovate and repair more than 600,000 decent, affordable houses sheltering more than 3 million people worldwide.

“This incredibly versatile machine will add efficiency and safety, and help meet many of the special challenges we face when working on urban infill lots in Wichita,” says Ann Fox, executive director, Wichita Habitat for Humanity. “The skid steer will be used to clear dead trees, concrete and brush from vacant lots. It also will manage dirt work, grade, unload and move construction materials and help set trusses. In the past large groups of volunteers would be assembled to do this work, or equipment was loaned or rented - adding complexity to scheduling.”

  • AEM Hails USMCA Entering Into Force

Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) president Dennis Slater issued the following statement as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) entered into force on July 1st:

“The USMCA entering into force is great news for equipment manufacturers and our industry’s 2.8 million men and women working across the United States and Canada,” said Dennis Slater, president of AEM. “This marks the start of a new chapter for North American trade. USMCA expands agricultural market access, establishes rules for e-commerce, strengthens labor and environmental protections, and updates customs rules that will cut red tape and make it easier for U.S. manufacturers to sell to their Canadian and Mexican customers. We applaud President Trump, Vice President Pence, Senate Majority Leader McConnell, and House Speaker Pelosi to get this agreement to the finish line.”

AEM was an ardent supporter of the USMCA since it was first proposed. The association actively advocated for our industry’s priorities with U.S. and Canadian government stakeholders, participated in the USMCA Coalition, co-hosted the Honorable Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States, at an equipment manufacturing facility in August 2019 to raise public support for the agreement, supported the work by Chairman Neal (D-Mass.) and the nine members of the House Democrats’ Trade Working Group, and ran an ongoing public education campaign on the various benefits of a ratified USMCA.

  • Nominations Now Open For 2020 Influential Women In Trucking Award

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) and Freightliner Trucks are seeking nominations for the 2020 Influential Woman in Trucking award.

A decade ago, the award was created to honor women who make or influence key decisions in a corporate, manufacturing, supplier, owner-operator, driver, sales or dealership setting. The winner must have a proven record of responsibility and have mentored or served as a role model to other women in the industry.

“When I first started my career, there were very few women in the trucking industry let alone in leadership positions,” said Kary Schaefer, general manager, Freightliner and Western Star product marketing and strategy, Daimler Trucks North America. “It’s amazing to see how the industry has changed and women are now a driving force in all areas of trucking. Freightliner is proud to sponsor this award and recognize those women who are not only making a difference in their own roles but for all women in the trucking profession.”

  • Executive Director Of Canadian Parks Council Joins Sustainable Forestry Initiative Board Of Directors

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada), an initiative of SFI, are pleased to welcome Dawn Carr, Executive Director of the Canadian Parks Council, to SFI’s 18-member Board of Directors. Carr has a successful track record of collaborating with SFI and PLT Canada. Notably, through the Canadian Parks Council and its network of national, provincial and territorial parks, she has supported, and continues to support, hundreds of high-quality work experiences for youth across Canada as part of PLT Canada’s Green Jobs program.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the SFI and PLT Canada Board of Directors. It is a welcome opportunity to contribute to an organization that is clearly committed to sustainability and growing the community of future forest and conservation professionals,” says Carr. “Nurturing a conservation ethic among young professionals is critical for sustaining nature and our collective health and wellbeing. I’m really looking forward to contributing my time and energy to help make a positive difference.”

PLT Canada has placed youth in over 2,500 jobs since 2018 with the help of the Canadian Parks Council and SFI employer networks. These job placements range from Park Rangers, to Environmental Monitors, to Forestry Technicians, and many more. The skills that youth acquire through these placements provide essential building blocks as they pursue careers in the forest and conservation sector.
