  • Women In Trucking Announces Its December 2020 Member Of The Month

Women In Trucking Announces Its December 2020 Member Of The Month
Mona Chisum, Driver Supervisor for TP Trucking, is Women In Trucking's
Member Of The Month for December 2020.

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Mona Chisum as its December Member of the Month. She is the driver supervisor for TP Trucking.
Chisum’s story began in 1988 when she drove her first truck. Teri and Amzel Butler owned a small logging company that Chisum’s husband at the time worked for as a log hauler. They lived on the job and Chisum’s husband watered the road at night with their 1956 Peterbilt water truck so it wouldn’t be as dusty the next day. One evening, Chisum tried driving the rig herself.
“The minute I got my hands on the wheel, it felt like I was home,” said Chisum.
There weren’t many female drivers, especially log truck drivers at that time. Amzel Butler not only partnered with her husband in the company, but she was also a log truck driver.
“Amzel is the reason I ventured into the transportation industry. My deep admiration for her was the catalyst that got me where I am today, the driver supervisor for TP Trucking,” said Chisum.
Chisum thought driving a water truck off-highway in the evening hours was a far cry from being a truck driver. In 1990, she had two small children and needed a job that would help support her family. She decided to take the test to obtain her CDL. She spent a few weeks learning how to drive a logging truck. The pre-trip gave her some trouble at first, but ultimately she became a CDL holder.
FV Martin Trucking hired Chisum, where she said it was like having 29 big brothers to learn from every day. While employed with FV Martin, she drove log trucks, flat beds, dump trucks and water trucks. She even experienced having one of their trucks as a tender on some forest fires.
In 2002, Chisum became the safety director at FV Martin. She enjoyed this role because she wanted to help the drivers be the best they could be. During that time, she learned a lot about DOT and OSHA regulations and even taught some highway drivers to be log truck drivers. In 2004, after 14 years, she left FV Martin to work as the safety director for a growing refrigerated freight company, Cross Creek Trucking.
“While there [at Cross Creek] I learned even more, but this time about life over the road. During that 11-year span I traveled cross country and learned to navigate big cities, manage my time to the best advantage, learned to live in a sleeper for several weeks at a time and saw some of the most beautiful sights in North America,” said Chisum.
Then in 2015, Chisum joined TP Trucking for what she believes is a long-term career move. She started out as a flat-bed driver and is now the driver supervisor. Her job duties include helping with electronic logging and dispatch devices, on-boarding of new employees and equipment allocation, to name a few.
For anyone, especially women, who are thinking about venturing into the trucking world, Chisum advises to remove the word “can’t” from your vocabulary.
“When I started in this industry, there weren’t many women and it’s so nice to see more and more out on the roads. Just because you haven’t tried it doesn’t mean you can’t do it,” said Chisum.
She suggests to take the time and work on strengthening your weaknesses. If you’re not very good at backing, take the time in the middle of the day when no one is around to practice. If you’re nervous about navigating the urban areas, get out a map, use Google and a GPS so you’ll feel comfortable about where you’re going.

  • Doosan Introduces Its Largest, Most Powerful Excavator For Mining And Construction

Doosan Introduces Its Largest, Most Powerful Excavator For Mining And Construction

Doosan Infracore North America has expanded its excavator lineup with its largest model yet. The new Doosan DX800LC-7 excavator increases the company’s footprint in the aggregate mining industry.
The crawler excavator’s size makes it ideal for pit and quarry customers. It’s also well-suited as a large machine for heavy construction and infrastructure work. It can efficiently remove overburden and load large amounts of material into trucks at quarries. On construction sites, the DX800LC-7 excavates, stockpiles or loads large amounts of material. The powerful machine makes these tasks go much faster.

    Durability & Reliability
Doosan prioritizes durability and reliability in the DX800LC-7 excavator. The unique double-boom foot design improves stress distribution to reduce single-side wear and maintain machine uptime. The design allows customers to more easily assemble or disassemble the boom for transportation.
DX800LC-7 customers can choose between three excavator arm options — standard arm, long arm and mass-excavation arm. The arm selection matches the machine to the job so the machine doesn’t waste power. All three excavator arm configurations include a heavy-duty front design with additional reinforcement on key stress points.
The excavator’s crossed design swing bearing supports stress distribution for machine uptime protection. Attention was given to improving wear points — boosting the machine’s reliability and keeping it running longer.

  • Canada’s First Coast-To-Coast Heavy Equipment Digital Showcase To Launch

Canada’s First Coast-To-Coast Heavy Equipment Digital Showcase To Launch

As the producer behind major trade events like the National Heavy Equipment Show (ON), the Canada North Resources Expo (BC), Expo Grands Travaux (QC), the Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show (NB), TRUXPO and the Pacific Heavy Equipment Show (BC), Master Promotions Ltd. has enjoyed bringing live events to the masses for close to five decades.
Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect travel and large gatherings. Given the volume of attendees that these trade events routinely attract, face-to-face events are no longer an option in many cities across Canada. To best support their exhibitors, attendees, sponsors, and partners, Master Promotions Ltd. is launching a new Canadian Heavy Equipment Showcase, intended to safely bridge the gap until in-person events can be held. We are still working towards some 2021 live events.
The Canadian Heavy Equipment Showcase is an online platform designed to allow users to browse exhibitors from each of the shows mentioned above in one unique location. Exhibitor listings are searchable by company name or by category, and include detailed company information, photos, videos, product highlights, and any special offers or promotions they choose to feature. Users can easily connect by clicking email, website, and social media buttons.
“We know that many companies rely on these events to advance business opportunities and strengthen professional connections,” said Mark Cusack, National Show Manager with Master Promotions Ltd. “We don’t believe these trade shows can be adequately captured in a virtual setting, so we’ve been working diligently to deliver another solution to connect industry professionals and support the heavy equipment community.”
The Canadian Heavy Equipment Showcase will be available for a limited time– from Monday, March 1 through Monday, May 31. This represents a significantly expanded timeframe from the typical two-day event, and lets users take their time to easily peruse the exhibitor database from the comfort and safety of their own home. The platform features a variety of exhibitor categories – from aerial lifts and aggregates to vocational trucks and wheel loaders.
Those who would normally attend any of Master Promotions’ heavy equipment shows across the country are encouraged to visit the Canadian Heavy Equipment Showcase website to sign-up for email updates with the most current information as well as an opportunity to win door prizes and other giveaways.

  • Polygon Composite Bushings Simplify Maintenance In K-Tec Heavy-Duty Earthmoving Equipment

Polygon Composite Bushings Simplify Maintenance In K-Tec Heavy-Duty Earthmoving Equipment

Polygon Company, a leading producer of composite tubing, bearings, and pneumatic cylinders, announces it has designed custom composite bushings for K-Tec Earthmovers for use in hydraulic cylinders and other pivot points on their heavy-duty scrapers and levelers. Used in extremely demanding mining and construction applications, the levelers and scrapers require bushings that can withstand vibration, strain, wear, and significant contamination without requiring frequent maintenance.
K-Tec Earthmovers was founded to perform well in heavy-duty earthmoving applications and landscapes that competing equipment simply couldn’t withstand. The company’s levelers and scrapers undergo extremely harsh conditions, including heavy loads, ingress of water, dirt, clay, and mud, and more. One significant component of leveling and scraping equipment is the hydraulic actuation system that sets the depth for each digging or scraping job. These hydraulic systems undergo significant strain and stress, and must remain functional throughout the equipment’s lifetime.
With collaboration between engineering teams, Polygon was able to deliver a custom composite bushing to K-Tec that performs well even under the extreme stress faced by earthmoving equipment. The strong composite material can withstand the strain, variable speeds, and vibration that the bearings undergo, while Polygon’s proprietary bushing liners have eliminated the need for greasing or other regular maintenance. The bushings remain functional even when exposed to the harsh environmental conditions of earthmoving applications.
Polygon’s custom bushings slow the wear process in this critical wear point, lengthening mean time between repairs and overall service life of the reliable K-Tec equipment. K-Tec and Polygon have a longstanding partnership, and multiple successful projects have been completed across several generations of K-Tec equipment using Polygon’s composite bushings.
“Given our heavy-duty applications, we knew from the start that we wanted greaseless bushings on our earthmoving equipment to reduce the need for daily greasing, so we reached out to Polygon,” said Rick Ragbir, Purchaser at K-Tec.
“Reducing daily maintenance by eliminating the need to grease daily is a huge selling point for our scrapers, and a major benefit for end users,” Rick Ragbir added. “Working with Polygon’s design team to get what we needed was extremely easy; the design experts we worked with could answer all of our questions, and when challenges about sizing arose, we were able to work together closely to solve those challenges effectively.”

This is an opportunity to share technology investments and also to help each other grow. I am confident that UD Trucks will become a bridge between the Volvo Group and Isuzu Motors and that the strategic alliance will create the conditions to continue to develop UD Trucks to a new level within Isuzu Motors. I also want to express my pride at how the UD Trucks team has been able to serve customers and continue to improve financial performance also during this unprecedented period, characterized by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Volvo Group will continue to support UD Trucks, and participate in the Asian markets through this alliance,” says Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of the Volvo Group.
“This is a very exciting day. We have signed the strategic alliance agreement with the Volvo Group. The difficult and unforeseeable COVID-19 situation has made the strategic alliance even more valuable and has built a solid, trustful relationship between Isuzu and the Volvo Group. This long-term partnership will span across products, technologies and regions, and actively contribute to service improvements and strengthened customer satisfaction as well as supporting the logistics industry. I am fortunate to have UD Trucks joining the Isuzu Group. UD Trucks will play an important role of the strategic alliance for efficient and effective collaboration between Isuzu Motors and the Volvo Group,” says Masanori Katayama, President and Representative Director of Isuzu Motors Limited.
The agreed purchase price on a cash and debt free basis, enterprise value, for UD Trucks is JPY 243 billion (approx. SEK 20 billion) to be paid to Volvo at the closing of the transaction. Furthermore, the agreement includes an earnout, in which an additional amount up to JPY 15 billion (approx. SEK 1.2 billion) is to be paid subject to the performance of UD Trucks during the years 2021-2023. UD Trucks’ revenues for the last 12 months (July 2019-June 2020) amounted to JPY 278 billion (approx. SEK 23 billion). The business had a marginally positive impact on the Volvo Group’s operating income in the same period. At the time of closing, the transaction is expected to result in a positive impact on the Volvo Group’s operating income of approximately SEK 2 billion and increase the Volvo Group’s net cash position in the Industrial operation by approximately SEK 20 billion. Closing is expected during the first half of 2021. The transaction is subject to certain conditions, including approval from regulatory authorities.
