  • Build Together: Women Of The Building Trades Partners With LeanIn.Org

    – NABTU, Build Together form partnership with LeanIn.Org –

Women continue to make up less than five per cent of the construction workforce. Build Together: Women of the Building Trades has made significant strides over the years to develop resources and materials that address real issues women face in the construction sector, including the establishment of provincial Build Together Chapters. Utilizing this established network, Build Together, along with North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU), have launched Lean In Circles for Union Tradeswomen a new partnership with www.leanin.org to connect tradeswomen, help them learn new skills to navigate bias and advocates for themselves, for a piloted six-month program across Canada and in St. Louis, MO.

  • World’s Best Customer Experience

With an eye on maximizing uptime, while improving communications for fleet customers, Kenworth has announced plans for an all-encompassing program that includes personalized customer care, and a web portal with connectivity to their Kenworth support team, instant access to product information, truck performance data, service history, and maintenance information.

“We’re aiming to set a new industry standard for customer care and support,” announced Kevin Baney, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. “We have established the foundation and we’ll be building out a comprehensive program throughout the year.

According to Baney, Kenworth has a long history of building custom trucks to meet the exact needs of customers. “Our breadth of products and options have long led the industry – building the right truck for the right job has been our mantra,” he said. “We’re now bringing that ‘customized’ approach to support after the sale, and that will allow our fleet customers to integrate more closely with Kenworth. We are committed to building relationships that last a lifetime to ensure the success of our customers.

  • At BCIT, Indigenous Youth Are Driving Canada’s Economic Engine

There’s one group in Canada whose growth is quickly outpacing all others: Indigenous youth. Since 2006, the country’s Indigenous population has increased 42.5%—over four times as fast as other demographics—and younger generations, in particular, have seen gains of 39%.

These young people are smart, driven, pragmatic, and motivated to join the workforce. But too often, the best job opportunities are in metropolitan centres, far away from many Indigenous communities. This forces young people to choose between their future careers and their homes, friends, and families.

So the question is: are there stable, in-demand industries that can bring lucrative jobs to the doorsteps of Indigenous youth? And do they allow the freedom to travel, live abroad, and change career tracks if so desired? As Vince Jones knows, job opportunities in the railway industry have been hugely successful in serving this need.

  • New Survey Technologies Help Conquer Challenges Of Difficult Terrain

Fieldwork for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP) is gearing up. Surveying for the Project right-of-way is underway in some areas. One of the remarkable aspects of the Project is the technology available to support construction compared with equipment available to surveyors for the original Trans Mountain Pipeline in the early 1950s. We connected with one of our original surveying contractors, McElhanney, which is now doing survey work on TMEP, to learn more.

McElhanney is the oldest, employee-owned engineering and geomatics firm in Canada. Tell us about your company’s history.

McElhanney was founded in Vancouver in 1910 by William Gordon McElhanney. In the early- to mid-1950s, the firm was busy with booming development in the city of Vancouver, construction of the Kemano Project for the aluminum smelter in Kitimat, a new highway up the west part of BC to the Yukon and supporting crews in the gas fields being discovered in the Fort St. John area. McElhanney company partner Bill Papove, a professional surveyor and professional engineer, led our crews working on the Trans Mountain Pipeline for Canadian Bechtel Ltd.
