    Canada’s maritime search and rescue workers save an average of 15 lives every day and are responsible for monitoring millions of square kilometres of some of the harshest marine conditions in the world.

    Yet the Canadian Coast Guard — which leads maritime search and rescue operations — is hampered by its position within Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which leaves it at the mercy of the department for funding and prevents it from receiving long-term sustainable capital funding.

  • “Big Lift” at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Macassa #4 Shaft

    The skyline of Kirkland Lake changed recently when the 213 foot tall concrete headframe for Kirkland Lake Gold’s new Macassa #4 shaft was slip formed in just 10 days. Another significant event in the #4 shaft construction occurred when the team of Cementation, Tesc, Anmar, Northern Equipment, Niiwin GP, Shaba Testing, Peter Bull, MDB Mining, the Ontario Provincial Police and Kirkland Lake Gold carried out the lift and placement of the shaft sinking Galloway and the equipping deck into the shaft collar through the top of the headframe.

    The lift started with the single drop deck that was attached to the bottom of the main Galloway once it was lowered into the #4 shaft. The Galloway, over 100 tons and 85 feet long, had to be lifted over the top of the 213 foot high headframe and lowered blindly into an exact position below surface in the shaft collar. The crane cables were extended 415 feet from the tip of the boom to the final position of the Galloway where the steel work platform was secured to the concrete walls of the shaft. A Liebherr 750 tonne crane was used to carry out the lift. Custom designed rigging was fabricated to ensure evenly distributed weight and a plumb (vertical) load for all three lifts. The lift commenced at approximately 3:00 p.m. and by 7:30 p.m. the Galloway had been secured in the shaft, weight had been transferred, and as Cementation’s Tom Wadey put it, “The Eagle has landed.” To give you an idea of the scale and uniqueness of the job, when the lift was explained to a veteran crane operator with over 40 years of experience he said “This one should make the cover of Crane Monthly!”

  • SENNEBOGEN Log-Handler Helps Edgewood Mill Keep “Up” With New Sawline

    Everything is on the up & up at the Edgewood sawmill, here in central Saskatchewan. The brand new Linck sawline is ramping up to full production. Yield from its processed wood is up 20%. And, thanks to a new SENNEBOGEN 830 M-T log-handler, summer stockpiles are stacked up higher than ever before.

    When the current owners, C&C Resources Inc., bought the former Weyerhaeuser property in 2009, the mill had been shuttered for five years. In 2016, the firm committed to a $25 million upgrade, highlighted by the installation of Canada’s first German-built Linck sawline in over 20 years. The equipment on the site was already aging out when the site was closed. The goal for the new Edgewood Forest Products was to upgrade to current technology, become more efficient and to take on the larger-diameter round wood available in the region.

  • The Federal Government Gives The Green Light To China At Expense Of Middle-Class Construction Workers

    It has been reported that the Canadian Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, has indicated a strong support towards granting LNG Canada a waiver on anti-dumping duties for fabricated structural steel. If granted, LNG Canada, a joint venture that includes PetroChina, will undermine Canadian construction and industrial workers by giving Canada’s largest infrastructure project in history to China—a proven dumping and subsidizing nation.

    “It’s shocking that the Canadian government would be so willing to allow and encourage the use of illegally dumped and subsidized fabricated steel, especially because the spin-off effect will see all trades suffer,” says Ed Whalen, President & CEO of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC). “Our federal government has been sold a bill of goods and are taking it hook, line and sinker. To take such an important project away from Canadians is a crime. We can build complex naval ships on both coasts, but we can’t build construction modules of smaller size and complexity? It’s insane.”

    As we wait on the pending approval of LNG Canada’s request from Minister Morneau, all Canadian industrial construction jobs are at risk. Thousands of Canadian industrial construction workers in plants and on sites will be passed on if the Canadian government gives the waiver to LNG Canada and allows them to sole source from China. LNG Canada is looking to offshore almost their entire project in Kitimat, B.C., worth $40 billion, by using a construction model called modularization.
