COVID-19: Currency Poses No Greater Risks Than Bank Cards Or Mobile Phones

The Canadian Association of Secured Transportation (CAST) released the following statement in response to the continued refusal by many retailers across Canada to accept cash as a method of payment due to fears of COVID-19 transmission.

The COVID-19 pandemic has quite rightly caused us to ramp up our hygiene and cleanliness practices; but it is important that we rely on facts, not fear, before we take measures that have serious consequences. Attempting to prevent the spread of COVID-19 with a ban on cash is a prime example, which can also have moral, societal and economic impacts. Based on the best available scientific literature, handling currency carries little risk of contracting COVID-19.

In March of 2020, the COVID-19 global pandemic had reached a point where businesses were forced to close and people were asked to stay home. Everyone, that is, except essential workers like the professional truck driver.

FPAC SHARES WITH MPS OPTIMISM FOR THE FUTURE DESPITE CURRENT CHALLENGES

On April 17th Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) President and CEO appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance to share with MPs how Canada’s forest sector and workers are managing through the current COVID-19 crisis. He also presented to the Committee ideas on how the industry and government can work together to get through the difficult months ahead, and quickly turn to recovery and growth again in 2021.

During his testimony, Derek Nighbor noted how the sector has embraced its role as an essential provider of health, household, and industrial products and thanked all workers along the value chain. “Our workers and partners along the supply chain have been incredible. We can’t say ‘thank you’ enough to our mill workers, further manufacturers, truck drivers, railroaders, and retailers – I could go on,” he said.
