  • BC Professional Truck Driver Gordon Price Named Canada’s 2019 National Driver of the Year

Gordon “Gord” Lynal Price, a Langley-based owner-operator, was named the 2019 Canadian Trucking Alliance/Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the Year at the annual Christmas Party of the British Columbia Trucking Association (BCTA) on December 5, 2019. Gord was chosen to receive this honour for a career in the trucking industry covering more than 32 years and over 4 million accident-free miles, as well as his willingness and ability to help others in need.

Gord was previously awarded the 2018 BC Driver of the Year award at BCTA’s Annual Management Conference in Whistler in June 2018 and was chosen from among his peers across Canada for national recognition.

Gord grew up in the industry, learning to drive truck at the early age of 10 (he turned 50 this year), and his route has taken him from the ice roads up north through the lower 48 US states. Gord’s career has also included time as a driving instructor and safety trainer. He is gregarious, proactive and quick thinking, traits that served him and a fellow Vancouver Islander well very early one morning in March 2018 on the Island Highway, between Chemainus and Nanaimo, when he noticed something on the side of the road during a load haul. Realizing that what looked like a blanket was actually a person, Gord pulled over and called 911, then assisted Patricia Galloway, who he found unconscious at roadside. Another driver kept his lights on the area for safety, while Gord spoke with 911 operators and administered first aid until an ambulance arrived. Ms. Galloway had apparently suffered a minor stroke, and Gord’s decisive action in responding to her presence may well have saved her life. Gord was based in Nanaimo at the time and has since relocated to Langley.

  • UK-based Small Mining Project Is ‘Brexit-Proof’

By developing technology innovation and rethinking business models, a new EU-funded project hopes to improve the commercial viability of mining modest but high-grade critical raw mineral deposits across Europe.

GlobalData’s mining technology writer Heidi Vella looks at the project.

She says: “Manufacturing of many modern technologies is reliant on the supply of several key metals and minerals. The European Union (EU) has highlighted their importance in a list of ‘critical raw materials’ that includes antimony, vanadium, tungsten, tantalum and 23 others.

  • Electric Trucks 2020-2030

IDTechEx Technology Analyst Dr David Wyatt has recently published a report update “Electric Truck 2020-2030”, focusing on electrification in the medium and heavy-duty truck markets, providing a comprehensive set of market forecasts.

Along with the rest of the automotive sector, the medium and heavy-duty truck market is evolving. Governments around the world, recognising the potentially catastrophic repercussions of unfettered climate change and witnessing the detrimental impact on human health from vehicle exhaust pollutant emissions in urban environments, are taking decisive action, that will, in the coming decades, drive vehicle manufacturers to zero on-road exhaust emission powertrain solutions. Consequently, the days of the fossil fuel-powered combustion engine are numbered.

In the face of tightening CO2 emission legislation for new trucks, that will be difficult to meet in the relatively near future with a fossil fuel combustion engine, and increasing pressure to limit peoples exposure to hazardous air pollutants in city centres, that are in large part the result of on-road transportation, a much cleaner source of power is required for future medium and heavy-duty trucks. This need is compounded by increasing demand for freight delivery as the retail industry grows its online sales platforms and people gradually abandon private car ownership for mobility as a service (Maas) platforms.

  • Construction Started On Sturgeon Terminal

Cando Rail Services has started construction of the Cando Sturgeon Terminal in Sturgeon County, Alberta. Phase 1 of the terminal will provide additional rail capacity to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and utilize a loop-track system to enable storage of up to 1900 railcars. Early works and site mobilization have begun with completion expected in 2020.

The new terminal will offer services seven days per week for railcar staging and storage, including unit-train storage capability, for short or long-term, loaded or empty railcars. Additional value-added services include railcar switching, air testing, railcar repair and cleaning, transloading, material handling, inventory management, car stenciling, placard replacement, AEI tags, DG inspections and graffiti touch-ups.

This investment marks a major milestone for Cando Rail Services, Sturgeon County and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. The majority of the value-added products produced in the Heartland, Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region, are shipped to national and global consumers by rail. Cando’s investment will increase market access and allow industrial facilities in the Heartland to concentrate on their core business, while partnering with Cando to access increased transportation and logistics solutions. World-class rail infrastructure will further enhance the competitiveness of Sturgeon County and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland for petrochemical, downstream energy and heavy industrial investment.

  • Wirtgen’s W 210 Fi Large Milling Machine: Master Of Efficiency In Action

Achieving high quality at low costs and a reliable assistant at hand – for milling machine operators, Wirtgen‘s new large milling machines are an important aid in road rehabilitation.

    Milling layers separately

A total of three W 210 Fi machines demonstrated the added value of their technological innovations during rehabilitation of the A 31 motorway, which connects the A 4 Milan-Venice motorway with the Alps. The task on a 1.4 km section in the province of Vicenza was to mill the pavement off to a depth of 22 cm near the Thiene exit. The lower base course was then stabilized with cement by a Wirtgen WR 250 recycler and soil stabilizer over an area of roughly 15,000 m² and subsequently compacted by Hamm rollers.
