  • Top Scientists, Writers And Academics Sign Open Letter Backing Nuclear To Tackle Climate Change

A distinguished and prominent group of Canadians and international men and women today released the text of an Open Letter to Canadians they will publish later this week in support of urgent action to reduce carbon emissions, including the need for next-generation nuclear technology to be part of the mix.

"Despite a vocal but dwindling 'anti-nuke' contingent stuck in last century's political battles," said David Schumacher, a signatory of the letter and organizer of the initiative, "these innovative nuclear power efforts deserve the support of government, industry, and all Canadians. Without nuclear it is going to be impossible to tackle climate change, so everyone has a stake in the success of these efforts."

Mr. Schumacher is an Emmy-winning Canadian filmmaker, whose documentary, "The New Fire," makes the case for next-generation nuclear to battle climate change.

  • Strong Safety Culture a Key to Trans Mountain’s Success

A core value at Trans Mountain is that no spill or leak is acceptable.

For Trans Mountain, scrutiny and public interest have greatly increased since we announced our Expansion Project in 2012. We strive to be transparent and sincere in our commitments to spill prevention and emergency response, to be publicly accountable for the operation of our business and to remaining grounded by our commitment to safety.

One of the ways we work towards these objectives – and connect with the public – is by participating in organizations such as the Canadian Common Ground Alliance (CCGA).

  • Federal Authorities File Direct Evidence for NEB Reconsideration Hearing

On October 31, 2018, Federal Authorities filed direct evidence with the National Energy Board (NEB) in relation to Project-related marine shipping, including mitigation measures, alternative means and requirements of any follow-up program.

The submission is part of the Reconsideration hearing for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. The hearing will consider any necessary changes or additions to the NEB’s May 2016 Recommendation Report, in light of the inclusion of Project-related marine shipping between the Westridge Marine Terminal and the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea limit in the “designated project” under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012). Direct evidence filed by Trans Mountain can be viewed here.

The evidence in the submission is confined to the List of Issues for the Reconsideration hearing and the NEB’s request to Federal Authorities of October 12, 2018, and is comprised of specialist, expert information or knowledge in the possession of each relevant authority. The Federal Authorities are: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Transport Canada (TC), Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA), Pacific Pilotage Authority (PPA), Health Canada (HC), Parks Canada (PC) and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

On October 31, 2018, Trans Mountain filed direct evidence with the National Energy Board (NEB), highlighting the company’s intensive examination of marine issues, risks and impacts relating to expanded tanker traffic in the Salish Sea, including potential marine mammal impacts and mitigation.

“Over the past six years we’ve taken great care to assess and include marine aspects in the Project, and additional safety and environmental safeguards will be in place when the Project proceeds,” says Ian Anderson, President and CEO of Trans Mountain Corporation.
