  • Women In Trucking February 2021 Member Of The Month

Women In Trucking February 2021 Member Of The Month

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Claudia Rodriguez as its February Member of the Month. She is a wellness coach for Rolling Strong.
Rodriguez has been in the wellness industry for over twelve years. Prior to joining Rolling Strong a year and a half ago, she had an online health products store. She also gave health and wellness workshops at universities, businesses, and other places around El Paso.
After a colleague emailed Rodriquez the Rolling Strong job posting saying, “This job posting describes you,” she decided to apply. Now she is thrilled to be using her talents in the trucking industry.
The trucking industry has unique health challenges. Although Rodriguez had coached people to improve their health for years through one-on-one coaching and workshops, she knew coaching professional drivers would be different. Even recommending something simple like “drink more water” is hard for truck drivers.
“First, I had to listen to their challenges and what they struggled with, and then I adapted my recommendations to something that would work for them,” she said.
Because she is a wellness coach, one might assume that Rodriguez doesn’t struggle with incorporating healthy habits, but it’s quite the contrary. “I actually decided to get my certification as a Health and Nutrition Advisor to find answers for my own struggles like my sugar addiction and my struggle with incorporating an exercise routine,” she said.
Some health principles Rodriguez has learned over the years include:

    • Just because something works (like a diet or exercise type) doesn’t mean it works for everyone. So, don’t feel bad if CrossFit or Keto didn’t work for you.
    • You don’t have to label your eating habits for you to eat healthy.
    • Emotions play a huge role on your health, take care of your mental health.
    • What works for you now, might not work in the future (you know, life!) so be extra patient with yourself when trying to find what works now.

Women In Trucking hosted a health competition through Rolling Strong that ended on February 15. Rodriguez coaches the participants on their health journey. “Every day I am inspired by the drivers I coach. I admire their discipline, how they overcome obstacles, and how they keep going even when they’re tired. Eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, and drinking water is a challenge for drivers. It’s definitely easier to eat fast food and consume energy drinks. However, what these drivers understand is that what they do every day affects their health and longevity,” she said.
For those drivers that are ready to make changes, the Rolling Strong program helps them incorporate healthy habits, lose weight, lower their blood pressure and cholesterol, improve their sleep, among other things. The Rolling Strong app allows for easy tracking of daily habits, personalized coaching, and competitions. This gives participants an opportunity to set a short-term goal, have a sense of community, and win prizes along the way.
“As women we have to re-learn so many things we’ve been taught in order to reach our full potential," she said. "We were taught to be good, to be quiet, and to be pretty. We need to learn that it’s okay take up space, to speak up, to say ‘no’, to set boundaries and be okay with disappointing others."

Handlers introduces Specialized Orchard And Vine Ferrari Tractors

In October, Handlers Equipment became the new exclusive importer and distributor of Ferrari Tractors in BC.  With over 30 years in business, the family-owned, Abbotsford-based business Handlers Equipment serves customers throughout the Vancouver metropolitan area and in a large area of southern and western British Columbia.
Born in Italy during the post-war reconstruction, Ferrari Tractors have long been intertwined with the mechanical evolution of agriculture. In 1965 they launched their first articulated tractor to great success.  In those early years, Ferrari already had a remarkably high technological orientation. Their product offerings have ranged from the first motor mowers, to the first agricultural machines for the transport of foodstuffs across very rough terrain.

“Ferrari is pleased to add another highly experienced and successful dealership to our Canadian network,” said John Webb, regional account manager for BCS & Ferrari Sales, “Handlers Equipment has proven to be customer focused and adaptive to the ever-changing demands of the marketplace.”
The Vega and Cobram Series Tractors have been designed for narrow rows, very tight turns with a low center-of-gravity for stability: row crops, vineyards, orchards, greenhouses and nursery gardens as well as the routine maintenance work, in both summer and winter, typically done by local municipalities.

  • John Deere Unveils 768L-II Bogie Skidder

John Deere Unveils 768L-II Bogie Skidder

John Deere introduces the new six-wheel 768L-II Bogie Skidder, a true woodland warrior designed to conquer wet conditions and steep slope terrain. Incorporating the proven, durable features found on the John Deere L-II Skidder lineup, the new 768L-II maximizes productivity, performance, and comfort when carrying hefty loads over long distances in challenging conditions.

John Deere Unveils 768L-II Bogie Skidder
“Profitability and productivity are critical in the woods, and as loggers take to new areas for jobs, they need dependable machines that are built with these niche applications in mind,” said Matthew Flood, product marketing manager, John Deere. “With our new 768L-II Bogie Skidder, we’re delivering a purpose-built machine that navigate tough terrain, such as swamps or steep slopes. Providing distinct features, the John Deere bogie skidder helps loggers maximize their potential, regardless of the conditions.”
The 281-horsepower 768L-II features heavy-duty bogie axles, which incorporate large components to maximize durability and stability for long axle and tire life. The heavy-duty axles are purpose-built for tough applications, effortlessly pulling heavy loads and maneuvering tough terrain. The smooth, stable operation results in reduced machine vibration, ultimately minimizing operator fatigue. Another key feature is the excellent tractive ability and floatation. When combined with the bogie axles, ground pressure is reduced, allowing the 768L-II to work in wet terrain not accessible with a four-wheel skidder. As a result, the harvesting window is extended, adding more working days to the calendar.
The new arch design provides the operator with an expansive rearward view of the grapple and work area, providing excellent visibility. Improving maneuverability, the long wheelbase and boom-arch envelope boost reach and lift capability for the boom and grapple, increasing dexterity in the woods. The tight turning radius enhances agility at the landing.
“The John Deere bogie skidder is hands down twice as good as a regular four-tire skidder. It’s just all-around better in my book for productivity and ground disturbance,” said Jason Dawson of Triple J Logging. “With the 768L-II, you can carry twice as much of a load, especially in wet conditions and on the steep terrain, without tearing the ground up.”
The 768L-II retains the other customer-favorite features introduced on the L-II product lineup. Streamlined and redesigned electrical and hydraulic systems result in improved uptime and increase guarding and protection of key components. An increased grapple squeeze force and two-speed winch further increase productivity, while articulation steering sensors improve the operator experience.
Highly regarded by customers, all L-Series II models feature a spacious cab, including ample storage space, configurable controls, and an effective HVAC system. Armrest-mounted electrohydraulic controls offer accessible, hand-finger operation of all machine functions, and joystick steering provides smooth control of steer, direction, and ground speed. The industry-exclusive Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) marries the efficiency of a direct-drive transmission with the smoothness of a hydrostatic drive. As a result, CVT provides more power to the ground by sensing the load, increasing torque and tractive effort as needed to maintain the desired speed.

  • The Future of Electric Scissor Lifts is Here

The Future of Electric Scissor Lifts is Here

JLG Industries, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company [NYSE:OSK] and leading global manufacturer of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and telehandlers, elevates the access industry once again with its now available all-electric DaVinci AE1932 scissor lift. Featuring zero hydraulics to help eliminate job site leaks and zero emissions to help control job site pollution, this 19-ft (5.79 m) scissor lift is purpose-built for applications where stringent environmental regulations must be met.
Every component on the DaVinci scissor is fully optimized, including the control, lift, drive and steering systems, to reduce the machine’s energy consumption by up to 70% as compared to a traditional scissor lift. This reduced energy consumption allows for the use of a single, lithium-ion battery.
“The DaVinci AE1932 scissor lift represents the next generation of electrification,” says Shashank Bhatia, senior director of engineering for MEWPs at JLG. “While there is no shortage of battery-powered or electric scissor lifts on the market today, these other models continue to include hydraulic cylinders for actuation, which require hydraulic oil for operation, leaving the possibility open for messy leaks on sensitive job sites. JLG continues to push the envelope in innovation around the entire construction ecosystem, from our rental partners to job sites. This new JLG all-electric machine unlocks new possibilities and applications where these types of machines could not be used in the past due to concerns surrounding leaks.”

    Control System
DaVinci lifts use a distributed architecture where each system (lift, drive and steer) is connected independently, helping reduce voltage drops and latency, while enabling the control system on the scissor to connect and communicate directly with each system.
Because the control system is fully connected to the entire machine, the DaVinci scissor can transmit data back to operators, fleet managers and service technicians via Bluetooth and cellular networks. This sets the stage for new features like the DaVinciGo app. This app provides real-time machine health and battery status information and the ability for service technicians to perform remote diagnostics and push over-the-air software updates.
