  • Semi-Truck Trailer Orders Surge in Q4

Semi-Truck Trailer Orders Surge in Q4

While many businesses unfortunately continue to struggle amid the COVID-19 pandemic, others — including Stoughton Trailers, LLC — are experiencing tremendous sales growth and boosting their staffing. Sales secured through several new dealers contributed to the fourth quarter’s dramatically increased order volume, as well as new fleet customers and existing customers across all markets. The majority of semi-trailers sold were dry vans, designed to hold palletized, boxed or loose freight.
“Despite the unpredictability we saw in the spring and early summer due to COVID-19, our business and industry have swiftly recovered and even thrived," said Stoughton Trailers Chief Commercial Officer Jeremy Sanders. "The fact that we’re experiencing such a large order volume increase for van trailers reinforces the health and resilience of our company, and the trust customers have in our brand.” Trailer sales declined from April to July as fleet customers became apprehensive about purchasing equipment in the first several months of the pandemic. However, orders began to rebound in August and have steadily grown from there, Sanders said. “Customers have since gained confidence that the freight business will remain strong and are investing in trailers as well as utilizing our Stoughton Lease rental trailer fleet,” he said. A second factor resulting in greater order volume is the shift of more freight toward online order delivery. The industry requires more trailers to manage the logistical challenges of increased parcel shipments.
The sharp order increase will keep trailer builders and other staff steadily busy through 2021, Sanders said. To attract new employees, Stoughton Trailers increased its hourly base pay for several important entry-level and skilled positions: assemblers, $16; machine operators, $17; and welders, $18.25. The company continues its aggressive recruiting effort that began in September, with the hopes of hiring several hundred workers in the coming months. • Concrete – The World’s Most Widely Used Material – Targets Carbon Neutral Future

Concrete - The World's Most Widely Used Material - Targets Carbon Neutral Future

Forty of the world’s leading cement and concrete companies today unveiled a joint industry ‘2050 Climate Ambition’. The ambition statement demonstrates the commitment of the industry across the globe to drive down the CO2 footprint of the world’s most used man-made product, with an aspiration to deliver society with carbon neutral concrete by 2050.
Launched by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) on behalf of its member companies, the ambition statement represents a critical milestone for the industry. It is the first time it has come together globally to state a collective ambition for a carbon neutral future. The statement identifies the essential levers that will be required to achieving carbon neutral concrete, including: reducing and eliminating energy related emissions, reducing process emissions through new technologies and deployment of carbon capture, more efficient use of concrete, reuse and recycling of concrete and buildings, and harnessing concrete’s ability to absorb and store carbon from the atmosphere.
The climate ambition builds on the longstanding climate commitments and sustainability progress of GCCA member companies and affiliate associations across the world, setting out a global vision for the long-term sustainability of concrete, the vital building material that has shaped the modern world.
Dinah McLeod, GCCA Chief Executive said, “As we face the challenges for future generations and begin global economic recovery, concrete will be even more critical to building the sustainable world of tomorrow. That’s why we are making this commitment today, in order that our crucial industry aligns with global targets, including the Paris Agreement.Concrete has a vital role to play in addressing the need for sustainable communities and prosperity. It is a key ingredient of infrastructure, homes, clean water and community resilience as our climate changes. Crucially, it will also help facilitate the transition to clean/green energy. We believe this journey will be challenging but are fully committed to working together with our members, partners and stakeholders across the industry and supply chain to achieve this ambition.”
The concrete and cement industry is a key part of the construction sector – which accounts for 13% of global GDP – with a track record of taking climate action. This has included delivering a 19% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious material along with a ninefold increase in alternative fuel use since 1990.
Albert Manifold, GCCA President and Chief Executive of CRH plc said, “The 2050 Climate Ambition represents our industry’s commitment to further reducing emissions and ensuring that the vital product we provide can be delivered on a carbon neutral basis by 2050. There is a significant challenge involved in doing so and achieving alignment across our industry on a sustainable way forward is an important first step. We cannot however succeed alone and in launching our ambition statement we are also highlighting the need for our industry to work collaboratively with other stakeholders in support of our ambition for a more sustainable future.”
GCCA member companies are currently developing a 2050 concrete roadmap which will set out the detailed actions and milestones that the industry will enact in order to achieve its ambition. This will include working across the built environment value chain to deliver the vision of carbon neutral concrete in a circular economy, whole life context. The 2050 concrete roadmap is due to be published in the second half of 2021.

Anthony Hobley, Executive Director of the World Economic Forum’s Mission Possible Platform which is working across different industries to help achieve a carbon neutral future said, “Ambitious business and industry action led leadership is vital to achieving the climate targets that the world needs to survive and thrive. We know that concrete is so important to many of the challenges humanity faces but we also know it needs to be delivered more sustainably. We are delighted by the important step of articulating the ambition for carbon neutral concrete and look forward to working with this industry collaboration to deliver the detailed pathway and tools necessary towards achieving a net-zero economy.
As the world deals with the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis, the construction sector is playing an important role in economic recovery. The GCCA’s climate ambition statement demonstrates its commitment to helping build a more sustainable and safer future – recognising that the world needs cleaner and greener infrastructure.

  • Southern California Edison Begins Testing Of Battery-Electric Freightliner eCascadia

Southern California Edison Begins Testing Of Battery-Electric Freightliner eCascadia

Southern California Edison (SCE), the primary electricity supply company for much of southern
California, recently welcomed a Freightliner eCascadia from the Freightliner Customer Experience (CX) Fleet to begin a three-month testing trial of the battery-electric Class 8 truck.
“SCE’s testing of the eCascadia is a major step down the path of achieving our company’s fleet electrification goals,” said SCE principal manager of Fleet Asset Management Todd Carlson, who manages the company’s fleet of more than 6,200 vehicles.
SCE is the first utility to test an electric truck from Freightliner and will use the eCascadia for material transport, moving heavy equipment like transformers, wire reels and switch gears from an Irwindale, California warehouse to SCE service centers and storage yards. SCE’s parent company, Edison International, recently published the 2030 goal to electrify 30 percent of their medium-duty vehicles and pickup trucks and eight percent of their heavy-duty trucks.

Southern California Edison Begins Testing Of Battery-Electric Freightliner eCascadia
Freightliner’s CX Fleet is partially supported by a partnership between Daimler Trucks North America and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) which focuses on improving air quality in large portions of Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, including the Coachella Valley.
“Projects like Freightliner’s CX Fleet are helping to demonstrate the viability of all-electric heavy-duty trucks and showing companies that zero-emission options will soon be here to meet their truck replacement needs,” said Wayne Nastri, South Coast AQMD’s Executive Officer. “These demonstrator fleets are a critical step for transitioning trucks to cleaner technologies and helping us to achieve our clean air goals for the South Coast Basin.”
When it enters series production in 2022, the eCascadia will be sold by Freightliner dealers like Velocity Truck Centers who operate seven new truck dealers in Southern California and support the Freightliner CX Fleet by providing vehicle service and fleet management.
“The future of zero-emission trucks is approaching quickly and Velocity is proud to lead the charge, along with our great customers, and our partners at Freightliner and Daimler Trucks North America,” said Scott Zeppenfeldt, senior vice president of operations, Velocity Truck Centers. “While there are a lot of unknowns in transitioning to an electric fleet, supporting our customers in these types of projects are an integral step to starting the journey.”
Freightliner’s CX Fleet is comprised of eight early series development trucks meant to test the integration of battery-electric vehicles into large-scale fleet operations. Feedback from Freightliner customers will help fine-tune final driving parameters like battery management software. Early examples of customer-driven eCascadia design include charging port placement on the truck, human-machine interface (HMI) controls and more. To-date, a diverse array of commercial trucking fleets including the nation’s largest for-hire fleets, grocery distributors, and less-than-load carriers have participated in the CX Fleet, with more customers participating in advance of series production.
“It’s critical that we collaborate with customers across multiple segments to further our understanding of how commercial battery-electric trucks will be part of a long-term solution in CO₂-neutral transportation,” said Richard Howard, senior vice president, on-highway sales and marketing, Daimler Trucks North America. “Our customers provide important, continuous feedback that contributes to our ongoing design and purposeful innovation of these trucks, and together we will lead the future.”
